I want to keep this place to myself. I don’t want it to get too cool or too crowded. I don’t want it to become one of these “Orange County scenes”. But, more than that, I really want Sol Del Sur to stay in business! So here is my plea – please, please, please go to Sol Del Sur.

Sol Del Sur is a small plates and tapas restaurant in San Jan Capistrano that prides itself on a healthy, fresh menu. They only use in-season, local ingredients and grass-fed meats. This makes their dishes naturally high in whole grains and Omega-3s and low in saturated fats and salt. The head chef puts a personal touch into everything he creates – something I can’t say of most Orange County chain restaurants. On my visit he came out to talk with me and my guest and tell us of his world-wide culinary adventures.

Because they use seasonal ingredients, the menu changes constantly. Every time you come back you’ll be surprised and delighted with something new. One thing you always find, however, is brave avante-garde flavors. Grilled watermelon with goat cheese and crisp serrano, asparagus pudding, candied bacon ice cream – all beyond the culinary imagination!

The ambiance is lovely – a small room with warm lighting and stylish décor. The wine list is varied and there is an excellent selection of artisan micro-beers available. Bring a date to Sol Del Sur or treat yourself to this South Orange County gem.
